Nicky and Pam talk to us about the VI Tennis Tournament they are competing in.
In November 2024, they will be at the VI National Tennis Tournament in Nottingham.
The pair have been friends for a long time, and it was in fact Pam who persuaded Nicky to join in at the South Yorkshire VI Tennis Club currently held at Graves Tennis Club in Sheffield (at Brentwood Tennis Club in Sheffield in the summer months). Nicky now loves the sport and they are both very excited to compete in the tournament together at Nottingham Trent University. However, they tell us that their friendship is left aside while they are on court, as they are there to win, then quickly picked up again afterwards!

They laugh as they tell us about Nicky’s ‘signature hit’ and Pam says “I fall for it every time!!”
Both are competing in the B2 category and both playing singles, then both playing doubles for the first time.
The game is played with a ball that has a bell in it and competitors are allowed 3 bounces before losing a point. Players have a variety of sight conditions which is why there are different categories. Nicky and Pam are both visually impaired, both hearing aid users and Pam also has some mobility issues. They both mention it is quite a challenge logistically thinking about accessing the venue, travel, hotels, navigating new streets and taxis etc, but both are getting organised and of course it will be worth it!
The tournament in Nottingham runs from Friday to Sunday and there is an awards ceremony at the end.
It is Pam’s 3rd tournament but Nicky’s first! So as we write this newsletter we’re wishing all the very best to the pair and look forward to hearing about the results. And hopefully, one day they will achieve their ambition of going to Wimbledon.
