Supertram – Dogs on trams public consultation – from Tuesday 4 February
South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) is launched a four-week public consultation on Tuesday 4 February, asking people to have their say on allowing dogs to travel on the Supertram network.
|
Background information
It is currently only possible for dogs (except assistance dogs) to be carried on the South Yorkshire Supertram system within a carry cage. This differs to other transport modes in South Yorkshire, where dogs are allowed on most buses and trains without the need to be taken in a carry cage.
Last year, SYMCA took the Supertram system back under public control as an initial step in our mission to build an integrated transport network. We are now consulting on changing the conditions of carriage to remove the requirement for dogs to be held in a carry cage when travelling on the Supertram system.
How to take part?
The consultation will run for four weeks and will close at 12:00pm on Monday 3 March 2025.
Anyone can take part in the consultation. You do not have to live in South Yorkshire.
All the information and how to take part is available at southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk/dogsontrams
Further information about the consultation is also available:
- by following us on X @TravelSYorks and @SY_Supertram
- via posters in our Interchanges, at tram stops and on-board trams
- via messages on digital information screens at tram stops
- via an email alert to all of our customers who have subscribed to our e-newsletter
- via a press release
- by calling Traveline on 0800 952 0002 (weekdays between 07:00 and 19:00 and at weekends/Bank Holidays between 08:00 and 19:00).
Paper copies of the questionnaire are also available from the Customer Service Desk at Barnsley, Doncaster, Meadowhall, Rotherham, and Sheffield Interchanges or by calling our Traveline team on 0800 952 002 to request a copy by post. Pre-paid envelopes will also be provided.
What happens next?
Following the consultation period, SYMCA will review the results of the consultation and may undertake a trial based on the feedback. We will use the outcome of the consultation and any trial to inform a policy decision on the carriage of dogs on trams.
Recommendations will then be made to the Mayor on whether to allow dogs to travel on trams in South Yorkshire.
How can you help?
Please get involved and have your say on our proposals to allow dogs to travel on trams. I would be grateful if you could please also help us to promote this public consultation and encourage participation by directing your communities, family and friends to the above web page and contact points. Their feedback will help us to inform a policy decision on the carriage of dogs on trams.
I have attached a copy of our consultation poster, if you wish to display it on your sites (paper copies available on request). I’ve also attached our social media graphics, if you wish to share them across your channels. Alternatively, please repost our @TravelSYorks messages.
