A Cruising Walking Group

The Sheffield Visually Impaired Walking (SVIWG) is a user led group that provides the opportunity for blind and visually impaired people in Sheffield City Region to take up (or continue) walking. They offer a range of different walks on different days of the week, varying in length and difficulty for those who enjoy the outdoors.

SVIWG is a very friendly group that is lucky to have lots of dedicated volunteer guides, and it is one of the groups that SRSB supports.

As with many of the groups associated with SRSB and RSS strong friendships form, and it was lovely to hear about a cruising trip that came about because of the group. It all started when there was a discussion with some clients who said they would love to go on a cruise, but didn’t think they would be able to. So members of the group decided to make it happen as a social trip, and the result was that 3 visually impaired people and 5 guides went on a cruise around the French and Spanish waterways. They had a fabulous time, as the photos show (Image description: photos are of the group in their evening wear!) They all arranged different outings along the way according to their varying interests and it worked really well.

All in all it just shows the importance of these kind of groups and how strong friendships develop and people support each other. If you would like to find out more about joining the group, either as a visually impaired person interested in walking, or as a volunteer to guide people with sight loss, please follow this link to find out more
