COVID-19 Update

SRSB and RSS logos The government announced proposed changes on Sunday (10th May) and then more detail this week.  Unfortunately, this has not had any impact on the services that we are offering at the moment, and regrettably, the vast majority of our services remain suspended. This means our SRSB Mappin Street Centre in Sheffield and RSS Ship Hill Centre in Rotherham are still closed, in the interest of limiting the spread of the coronavirus.

Even though our centres have had to close for now, our priority remains the same; the welfare of our clients. We have been incredibly proud of our whole team and the dedication that everyone has shown for putting the protection of our clients and our charity first, and adapting to the changes we had to make.

The majority of the staff have been designated as “furloughed workers” which is the government’s term for staff which have been laid off but 80% of their salary is being funded by the government. This decision was not taken lightly but as a necessity to safeguard our staff, and ultimately our charity, so that they hopefully will be able to return to work when the coronavirus crisis is over and help us rebuild our services to support our clients – blind and partially sighted people in Sheffield and Rotherham as well as hearing impaired people in Rotherham.

The remaining very limited services are now:

1. Telephone advice and support for our clients, including welfare benefits advice.

2. Shopping for essential food etc and collection/delivery of medication – this is primarily for our vulnerable and isolated clients without good support from family, friends and neighbours.

3. We are contacting by telephone all the clients that regularly attended our Activities Centre in Sheffield and our Ship Hill Centre in Rotherham and are very grateful to several volunteers who are helping with this and also to those who are maintaining their regular Tele-Contact and Tele-Friends with clients. Currently they are making over 500 phone calls per week.

4. Telephone Assessments for all new referrals.

5. Cairn Home, our residential care home at Crosspool is, of course, still functioning, but no visitors are allowed due to coronavirus. The home is currently COVID-19 free and the team are doing a fantastic job of caring for our residents.

The only way of contacting us now is by telephone on 0114 272 2757 (SRSB) or 01709 722 420 (RSS) or email to and Please only contact us if the matter is urgent and please be patient as we only have a skeleton staff responding to enquiries and delivering the above services.

Moving forward we are currently investigating which, if any, of our services can be restored in some format in the short term and how we might be able to adapt our services to maintain social distancing until the coronavirus is fully defeated. We are very much aware of how vital are services are but please be assured, our priority remains the safety of our clients, volunteers and staff, and ultimately our charity.

Please keep checking our Social Media pages which are a great way for you to keep in touch with what we’re doing during this time.

We are really missing being with all our clients, volunteers and staff and can’t wait to see everyone again as soon as is possible.

Please keep following the government guidance for preventing the spread of coronavirus.

We hope you stay safe and that you remain virus free.

Thank you for your understanding at this very difficult challenging time.
