We recently honoured one of our staff members for his 29 years of service at our residential care home in Crosspool. Kevin McGrath retired as Manager at Cairn Home, and staff, trustees, residents and resident’s relatives, along with special guest, the Earl of Scarbrough attended a small gathering to acknowledge the great contribution Kevin has made.

Kevin began work at Cairn in 1989, which was the year the Berlin Wall came down, and believe it or not, before you could send a text on your phone! He started as cook in the kitchen, then progressed to Deputy Manager in 1994, finally taking over as Manager in 1998. He has been responsible for implementing a high quality of service provision, which has resulted in the home achieving a ‘Good’ rating from Care Quality Commission, the government’s inspecting body for care establishments.
Trustee David Shepherd spoke to the gathering about his commitment and contribution, and Kevin spoke to thank his team and said that he is leaving Cairn in a good place to move forward. Another long serving member of staff, Helen Sturgess, takes over as Manager.
Whilst at the gathering, the Earl of Scarbrough, who is Patron of SRSB, had a tour of the beautiful gardens at Cairn Home that have been designed with elderly and visually impaired people in mind.
Steve Hambleton, SRSB's General Manager, comments “Kevin retires leaving a fantastic legacy, having built excellent quality with a strong team. He will be missed, but fortunately staff and residents will still see him, as he has decided to continue to care for the gardens at Cairn.”
