Our Staff

Our friendly staff are dedicated, experienced and passionate about providing individual care and support for our clients. With over 75 staff, full and part-time, it is not practical to list all of them here but they all play an important role in enabling SRSB to deliver a comprehensive range of high quality services. Our visually impaired staff not only fulfil a very important role in the jobs they do for SRSB but they also clearly demonstrate to any potential employer how blind and partially sighted people can make a valuable contribution to their organisation. We employ Robert McCann in our Equipment Centre, Darren Furness is our Technology Officer and  Kyle Crossland is our Support and Information Officer.

Below, we will introduce you to some of the team: 

Steve Hambleton, General Manager

Accountable to the board of trustees, the General Manager has responsibility for all aspects of the operations of the Society.

Steve, with the support of his staff team, has overseen the development of the charity, bringing its building and its services up-to-date in order to secure the future of SRSB, so it can continue to be the reliable service that our clients depend upon. One of his most significant achievements so far has been to oversee the complete rebuild of the Mappin Street Centre.

He originally trained as an accountant and prior to joining SRSB in 2000 he worked in the roles of Company Accountant, Financial Director and Commercial Director in the Toy Manufacturing, Farming and Engineering Sectors.

David Cox, Activities Centre Manager

David became a full-time permanent member of staff on December 1st 2015. His association with SRSB began in February 2011 as an Occupational Therapy (OT) student on placement. He continued to lead the Wednesday singing group from then to his appointment and the SRSB Singers, as they are now known, continue to grow. 

Prior to the SRSB David worked for the Alzheimer’s Society and has added the experience gained there to his OT knowledge and aims to foster a client-lead approach to the services provided by the SRSB.

Angela Argenzio, Finance Manager

Angela joined SRSB in December 2015 as Finance Manager, she reports directly to the General Manager and is responsible for the Finances and Human Resources of our charity.

Angela has over 20 years experience in the voluntary sector as a campaigner and a trustee, including managing the finances of  local groups. She was the Finance Officer for the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus for 5 years. Before joining SRSB Angela was a teacher for 16 years.

Joanne Ardern, Community Advice Team Leader

Joanne co-ordinates many activities at SRSB alongside her role as CAO Team Leader. Her role as Community Advice Officer encompasses a wide range of support and advice for our clients and she is an invaluable member of our team, having years of experience in the field after joining SRSB in 2001 and taking on the role of Team Leader in 2005.

Joanne also oversees Little Sparklers as well as other our other services and activities for children (where she is assisted by Cheryle Swift and volunteers). She is also passionate about art and culture and organises the Culture Club trips and runs the monthly Book Club.

Debra Smith, Volunteer Co-ordinator

Debra joined SRSB in December 2015 as part time Volunteer Co-ordinator.  Prior to joining SRSB, she was employed in the voluntary sector for the last 16 years in a variety of roles but primarily working with volunteers. 

Sue Coggin, Fundraising & Marketing Manager

Sue was appointed as the first Fundraising & Marketing Manager for SRSB in 2005. She has brought a great deal of experience, local knowledge and passion to the charity and has significantly increased fundraising income helping to secure the future of the charity.

Prior to joining SRSB, Sue worked for a number of years on the management team at John Lewis and then in the fundraising department for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Sue has a great affection for SRSB and the work it does as her Mum was registered blind and a client at SRSB.

Kate Taylor, Eye Clinic Liaison Officer (ECLO)

Kate joined us as Eye Clinic Liaison Officer at the beginning of 2017. This is an exciting new role, based at the Eye Clinic in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, helping to make a difference to the lives of blind or partially sighted people in Sheffield City Region.

Kate will provide information and advice to blind and partially sighted people, family members and carers at the point of diagnosis. She will provide emotional support and raise awareness of services that will empower visually impaired people to make informed choices to maintain and develop their independence.

Kevin McGrath, Manager at Cairn Home

Kevin took over the management of our residential care home in 1998 having originally joined Cairn Home as cook in 1989 and progressed to the role of Deputy Manager in 1994. He has been responsible for implementing a high quality of service provision, which has resulted in the home achieving an ‘Excellent’ rating from Care Quality Commission, the government’s inspecting body for care establishments.

Helen Sturgess, Deputy Manager at Cairn Home

Helen joined Cairn Home as a care assistant in 1989 and progressed through various managerial/administration roles, taking on the role of Senior Assistant Manager in 2011, and having been promoted to the role of Deputy Manager in 2017.

Samuel Ewart, Senior Assistant Manager at Cairn Home

Samuel joined Cairn Home in May 2017 as Senior Assistant Manager. He has worked with the elderly in various management positions for most of his working life, eg residential care homes, day centres. Prior to joining SRSB he worked in a rehabilitation centre for people with sight loss..

Sadie Dennett, Assistant Manager at Cairn Home

Sadie joined Cairn Home as a care assistant in 2013 progressing to senior care assistant and then Assistant Manager in 2015.
