People who have both hearing loss and sight loss are referred to as DeafBlind. They are potentially even more isolated than people with just sight lossand have complex communication needs. Some people find it difficult to meet in large groups so SRSB operates a DeafBlind Group. They meet every Thursday at our Mappin Street Centre from 10:30am to 2:30pm and provides an opportunity for up to 12 deafblind people to meet on a social basis in an environment that takes account of their specialist communication needs.
The group is run by Rachel Smith, a trained guide communicator with signing skills, with supprt from volunteers. They ensure that the members of the group enjoy a range of activities and outings.
Refreshments are served and there is no charge for attending. A 2 course lunch, cooked in our own kitchen, is available at the subsidised price of £4.
