Our RP Group met for the second time in November and we were pleased to welcome a guest speaker from the Eye Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
Mr Acharya is a Medical Retina Consultant and he came to speak to the group about the advancements that are being made in medical research. This included information on gene therapy, stem cell research as well as discussing artificial retinas and nano technology. He updated the group on the other recent developments by

scientists using nutrients, which it is hoped will stop cells losing sight.
He also explained that because RP covers such a wide area, they are hoping there will eventually be better gene diagnosis and that everyone will not be grouped in the wide spectrum that is encompassed by RP at the moment.
He expressed how pleased he was that there is such a good strong group in Sheffield and that he would like to attend the meetings twice a year to catch up and feedback any information that is relevant.
Mr Acharya took questions at the end of his talk. We would like to thank him for his time and consideration in the way that he spoke to us all about this sight condition.
The group was very well attended and we look forward to the next meeting in the New Year. There will be a presentation about accessible technology and Mr Acharya will be attending again. Please let us know if you would like to attend by contacting 0114 272 2757 or email info@srsb.org.uk
