Mobile Information Unit visit

SRSB's New Mobile Information Unit Service Underway

SRSB's new Mobile Information Unit was out in Lowedges on Saturday 29th November, supporting The Terminus Health Project’s ‘Beat the Winter Blues Family Fun Day’ at Gresley Road Community Centre. This was one of its first visits of many!

Despite rather dull and drizzly November weather, the unit welcomed aboard over fifty local people for a friendly chat with Liz, our new Mobile Information Officer, about the work and services of SRSB. Having volunteer Mike on the unit too that day, a visually impaired volunteer with Charles Bonnet Syndrome, meant that questions about what it was like to live with sight loss could be answered from first-hand experience which added a valuable dimension to the day.

Liz and Mike also demonstrated some of the special equipment that helps people with sight loss stay independent and continue to make the most of life. Lots of people picked up leaflets on eye health and there were enquires about volunteer opportunities and the Activities Centre and Equipment Centre at SRSB’s Mappin Street Base.

Decked out with balloons, with our mascot Ellie sitting in the doorway to catch the eye of the children, each young visitor was offered a special SRSB stickered chocolate coin to encourage families to swop a ‘coin for a coin’ by dropping some small change into the collection box beside Ellie.

The children were also fascinated to experience what it feels like to have an eye condition through trying on the simulation spectacles specially designed to show how having cataracts or tunnel vision affects  people’s sight in very different ways.

Pam and Brenda, the organisers of the event, were pleased that lots of local people of all ages had stopped to look on board the Mobile Information Unit so booked it for a return visit at their next community fun day. In the meantime, we are looking forward to seeing some of the people we met at our Mappin Street Centre.
